Herman Mayer

FOREST GROVE — Herman J. Mayer, a longtime member of St. Anthony Parish, died Tuesday, Aug. 12. He was 83.
Mr. Mayer was born Feb. 8, 1925 in Portland to Carl and Wilma Mayer. He was raised and received his early education in Portland, then attended Visitation High School in Verboort and later graduated from Forest Grove High School, class of 1944.
Right after graduation, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving for two years until receiving his discharge at Fort Lewis, Wash., as a sergeant. He married Margaret Deman in 1946 in Forest Grove.
Mr. Mayer worked in several sawmills until 1949 when they moved to Los Angeles, where he attended electronic schools and worked for North American Aviation until 1953 when they returned to the Forest Grove. There, he opened and operated Mayer Television Service for several years. After selling his business, he worked at Tektronix for more than 20 years until he retired in 1986.
For more than 50 years, Mr. Mayer was a Knight of Columbus. He was also a member of Kiwanis, Elks, the Forest Grove Elks Vagabond Camper Club, a local bowling league and various committees. An accomplished woodworker, he enjoyed the outdoors, football, oil painting and growing plants in his greenhouse.
He was preceded in death by his brother Bill and sister Christina. Survivors include his wife and sisters Geri Duyck, Marie Anderson and Jeanette Broemeling.
A Funeral Mass was Aug. 19 at St. Anthony. Remembrances may be made to youth activities through Forest Grove Elks or to St. Vincent de Paul at St. Anthony.
