Lloyd “Jack” Bruce, 89, died March 26. There will be a rosary at 1:30 p.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at St. John the Baptist Church in Milwaukie.
Mr. Bruce was born May 17, 1927, in Seattle to Gordon and Babe Bruce. He spent his early years in Seattle then moved to Portland, where he spent the majority of his life.
Mr. Bruce attended high school at Benson Tech in Portland where he served as their senior class president. He attended college at the University of Portland and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business.
He entered the Merchant Marines and spent time in California, but decided to make a change and left the Merchant Marines for the Air Force, spending time in San Antonio, Texas. He was transferred back to Portland with the Oregon Air National Guard, weather detachment. Mr. Bruce received an honorable discharge in 1952.
Mr. Bruce and the girl across his Lake Oswego street, Lee Meadows, spent time sailing, water skiing on the lake in the summer time and ice skating on the lake in the winter.
The couple married July 16, 1949, in Lake Oswego.
Mr. Bruce worked for Portland Fish Company and moved his family, for a short while, to San Francisco.
He then became a restaurant owner, beginning with Sellmore Ice Cream in Portland, then the Circle B Chuckwagon. He sold the business and spent his remaining working years at Rodda Paint Company.
He was a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was the maintenance person for St. John the Baptist Church in Milwaukie.
Mr. Bruce loved the outdoors and spent time with family camping, fishing, hiking, sailing and canoeing. He was accomplished with wood working and spent time carving pieces of art. He also produced five handmade canoes.
After he retired he and his wife traveled to parks, lakes, rivers and the ocean. He also loved traveling to Westport, Washington, where his mother, aunts and cousins had settled many years earlier.
He is survived by his wife, Lee Bruce; five children, Becky Christen, Jeff Bruce, Kevin Bruce, Tom Bruce and wife, Kelly, and Joe Bruce and wife, Mona; eight grandchildren, Erin, Stefanie, Josh, Allison, Jaime, Lindsay, Ashley and Alex; and twelve great- grandchildren, Paige, Grant, Bailey, Ryder, Oliver, Evan, Kaylee, Savanah, Caleb, Eli, Simon and Addie. Mr. Bruce was preceded in death by his grandson, Ryan.
