John Cook

TIGARD — John Earl Cook, 90, died Jan. 14. There will be a funeral Mass 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at St. Anthony Church.

John Earl Cook was born on March 15, 1926, to Earl and Margaret Cook in Portland. He attended St. Phillip Neri and graduated from Central Catholic High School. He served in the Navy in both World War II and the Korean War. He graduated from Oregon State in 1950 with a degree in pharmacy.

He married Pansy (Pam) Spohn in 1957.  They owned Tigard Pharmacy, which later became Cook’s Pharmacy, for 25 years. The pharmacy sponsored many local sports teams for youth over the years.  John then went to work for the State Board of Pharmacy until his retirement.

Mr. Cook was an active community member, serving on the Tigard park board, city council, and as mayor. Cook Park is named after him due to the role he played on the park board and his advocacy in gaining the land for the community. He was a member and past president of the Tigard Chamber. He was named First Citizen in 1982. He was a member of St. Anthony Church, involved in the church community and in St. Vincent de Paul. He was key in writing grants that brought funds to support the food pantry, build the new building, and provide rent and utility assistance

Mr. Cook is survived by his children, Julie and John, and their spouses; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Anthony Building Fund or St. Vincent de Paul.
