Stanley Gerkman

OREGON CITY — Stanley Alfonso Gerkman died peacefully Jan. 5. There will be a rosary for him at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13 at St John the Apostle Church in Oregon City followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. He will be buried in St. John Cemetery immediately following Mass.

Mr. Gerkman was born April 1, 1922, in Oregon City, one of eight children born to James and Mary Gerkman.

He attended McLoughlin Institute and Oregon City High School. He worked for Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill, but left to join the Navy in September 1942. He served in the maintenance and repair of gunnery equipment department. He was stationed in Texas and the Galapagos Islands. He was proud that his ship crossed the equator Oct. 29, 1945. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on his mother’s birthday: Jan. 26, 1946.

He returned to work for Crown Zellerbach for the next 39 years. Mr. Gerkman was a lifelong member of St. John the Apostle Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 62 years. He was also a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved to garden and travel and was a caregiver to family members in need of help.

He was a lifelong bachelor, and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

His parents and siblings, James, Rose Planton, Cecilia Blais, Ludwig, Frank, Ernest and Jennie Schnack, all predeceased him.
