Sr. Janice Boogaard, SSMO

BEAVERTON — “God has been so good and so fulfilling.”

That is how Sister of St. Mary of Oregon Janice Boogaard described her life of ministry in 2016 as she prepared to celebrate her 60th jubilee as a Sister of St. Mary Oregon (SSMO).

Sr. Janice died on Jan. 7, at the SSMO Motherhouse in Beaverton. A vigil service for Sr. Janice will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, in the SSMO motherhouse, 4440 SW 148th Ave. (Murray Boulevard at TV Highway), Beaverton. A  Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Jan. 16 in the SSMO Chapel.

Janice Mary Boogaard was born to Cornelius and Alfreda Boogaard Aug. 5, 1938, in Perham, Minnesota.  Her elementary and secondary school studies took place in Otter Tail County and New York Mills, Minnesota; Rochester, New York; Verboort, Oregon; and at St. Mary of the Valley (now Valley Catholic) in Beaverton.

An avid learner, Sister Janice continued her studies at Portland Community College, where she earned a food service certificate. She went on to earn a certificate in religious education at the University of Portland and a bachelor’s degree in pastoral ministry at Marylhurst University. She continued to attend workshops and seminars throughout her life.

Aug. 15, 1956, Sister Janice was received as a novice by the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon and became known as Sister Mary Mark. She made her final profession in 1961.

She served in various positions in the SSMO Community — including housekeeper, cook, laundress and baker — until 1981. She then served as religious education coordinator at St. Boniface Church in Sublimity; master catechist at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Camas, Washington; director of religious education at St. Paul Parish in Silverton; and pastoral associate at St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood. She retired from full-time ministry in 2002 but continued to serve others. She celebrated her 60th jubilee in July 2016.

SSMO Superior General Sister Charlene Herinckx said, “For many years, Sister Janice was the coordinator of the seventh-graders program at the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Motherhouse and found great joy in supporting the students at their performances and presentations.”

Sister Charlene added, “Always interested in what was happening in the SSMO Community, Sister Janice had a ready smile that was trumped only by the sparkle in her eye. Changing schools as often as she did as a child did not dampen her spirit of meeting and visiting with old friends and new acquaintances.”

Sister Janice Boogaard is survived by her Sisters in the SSMO Community; her brothers Jerry and Ron and their spouses; her sisters Bev Evers, Margie Vandehey, Darlene Moore and Joyce Hunter and their spouses; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Virginia, and her brother Jim.

Memorial offerings may be directed to the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Retirement Fund.
