Robert Gilbertz

Robert James Gilbertz died peacefully at home surrounded by his family Nov. 25. There will be a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at St Agatha Church, 1430 SE Nehalem St, Portland. A recitation of the rosary will precede the service at 10 a.m. and a luncheon will follow in the parish hall.

He was born Feb. 18, 1927, to Emma and John Gilbertz (his mother’s 30th birthday) in Ferdinand, Idaho. He was the youngest of four children. His father died when young Robert was a teenager, after which his family moved to Portland. He attended Central Catholic High School and University of Portland. He worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 45 years.

He was a member of the Portland Chancellor Club, where he met and married Joan Twitchell and developed many lifelong friends. The couple shared 59 years of marriage, and had five children, seven grandchildren and one and a half great grandchildren.

Mr. Gilbertz loved the services and the people at both St. Agatha and Sacred Heart churches. He coached CYO basketball at St. Agatha, where his children and grandchildren attended school. He spent many hours each week at the St. Agatha Adoration Chapel and was a server at the 6:30 a.m. mass. He was named St Agatha’s Holy Name man of the year in 1976. He gave 19 gallons of blood for the American Red Cross.

Mr. Gilbertz could be seen walking around the neighborhood most evenings, going to the beach, skiing and hiking with family. He played regular games of pinochle and poker both with his men’s group and with Joan in couple’s groups. He played golf with friends most weekends.

He is survived by his wife Joan; all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother, John Gilbertz; and many cousins. Remembrances can be made to Friends of St Agatha or Sacred Heart Building Fund.
