Donald Creitz

Donald James Creitz, 79, a parishioner at St. Ignatius, Portland, died Nov. 16. There was a funeral in the chapel at Cherrywood Village, Portland.

Mr. Creitz was a native Oregonian, born June 3, 1937, to Albert and Lenore (Tamiesie) Creitz. He lived in the Portland area his entire life, surrounded by friends and family.

His father, Albert Creitz, was a well-known concert violinist. His mother was Portland Rose Festival Queen in 1929. Mr. Creitz was always very proud of his German and Swiss heritage, with great-grandparents on both sides of the family settling in Oregon in the 1870s. He graduated from Hosford Grade School and Central Catholic High School. He retired from Portland Public Schools in 1999 after working for 27 years in the administration building where he made two trips per day picking up and delivering jobs from the print department. For years he dressed as Santa as he made his trips at Christmas time. He enjoyed a variety of activities throughout his life, including a Toastmasters group, the Ashland Shakespearean plays, retreats to Mount Angel Abbey Monastery, and telling people, “I’m James Bond, 007.” He enjoyed the University of Portland Hawaiian Club luaus so much that he was given his own surprise 70th birthday luau.

He moved to Cherrywood Village in about 2003 and lived first in independent living then in assisted living. He felt at home there and knew nearly everyone. His brother, Norman Creitz, preceded him in death. He is survived by nephews and nieces, grand-nieces, cousins, sisters-in-law and caregiver and friend Frank Hooper.

Mr. Creitz established an endowed scholarship fund at Central Catholic High School which will continue to be funded in perpetuity by the Creitz Family Charitable Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation.

He is being interred at Wilhelms Portland Mausoleum next to his parents.
