Richard Unger

Richard Joseph Unger, 89, longtime Portland resident, died peacefully Nov. 26.  There will be a rosary at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, at St. Mary Church, Mount Angel, where Mr. Unger was baptized. The funeral Mass follows at 11 a.m.

Mr. Unger was born in Mount Angel Nov. 8, 1927, to Edward and Gertrude Unger. He graduated from Mount Angel Preparatory, Gonzaga University, St. Louis University, and University of Oregon.  For a time he worked as a purser for TWA and traveled the world.  Mr. Unger then taught English, government and economics in high schools in Silverton, Klamath Falls and Prineville, as well as in the Portland Public Schools District at Roosevelt, Madison, Adams and Grant High Schools.  After retiring from the Portland Public Schools, he acted as librarian at Jesuit High School and then as the administrator at Holy Rosary Church in Portland.  Deeply dedicated to his faith, he was in later years a parishioner of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland and St. John Fisher Parish.

His brothers, Arnold, Bill and Jim Unger preceded him in death.  He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Hickey Unger, daughter, Catharine of Anchorage, Alaska, and son, David, and his wife; three granddaughters; his sister, Marian McDonald of Redmond, brother, Tom of Silverton, and many nieces and nephews.
