"Óye Oyá," an original Spanish-language musical inspired by the Cuban Zarzuela musical comedies and Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” is about the power of love, compassion and forgiveness.

The treatment is by Rodolfo Ortega, an award-winning composer for film, television and theatre. He has composed music for indie films like “The Good Lot” and for the PBS documentary “No Perfect Answers: The Life and Architecture of Pietro Belluschi.” He has sound designed and composed for some of the most prestigious theater companies in the United States, including The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (“The Tenth Muse”) and Denver Center Theatre Company (“The Three Musketeers,” “Romeo and Juliet”).

The story is based on a book by Rebecca Martinez, a long-time Milagro collaborator who most recently wrote and directed “American Sueño,” which toured nationally. Other Milagro-produced works she has written or directed include “Oyá: Call the Storm,” “La noche eterna,” and “Xandu’ Ya’.” Now based in New York, she has worked with the One Minute Play Festival, the 52nd Street Project, FringeNYC, Hybrid Theatre Works, and on developmental works for the Lark, Cherry Lane, and Working Theater among others.

The play’s director, Estefanía Fadul, is a Colombia-born, New Hampshire-raised, New York City-based director and producer. Directing credits include “The House of the Spirits” by Caridad Svich (SUNY Purchase) and “Cell” by Cassandra Medley (Drama League DirectorFest). Her current and upcoming work includes collaborations with playwrights Fernanda Coppel, Gina Femia, Elisabeth Frankel, Krista Knight and Tatiana Suarez-Pico.

Milagro’s sponsors include the National Endowment for the Arts, the U.S. Bank Foundation, The Oregonian and El Centinela, the Catholic Sentinel’s sister publication.

Milagro, founded in 1985, encompasses Teatro Milagro, a touring and arts education program. The theater presents original bilingual plays and educational residencies to diverse and underserved communities across the country.

The opening show, at 7:30 on Friday, April 28, features a reception catered by Pambiche Cuban restaurant.
