Before they depart, the Marylhurst Chamber Choir will give two free performances, “a dress rehearsal of sorts for the Grand Prix of Nations competition,” Smith said. All are invited to hear the choir perform Friday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Holy Names, Mary’s Woods, or Sunday, July 2, at 4 p.m. at St. Anne Chapel, Marylhurst University.

Marylhurst University’s internationally award-winning choir, the Marylhurst Chamber Choir, will travel to Riga, Latvia, in July to compete in the Grand Prix of Nations competition at the third international Choir Games. Directed by Justin Smith, the choir is the only ensemble from the United States invited to participate in the international competition, attracting hundreds of choirs from 28 countries worldwide.

In 2016, the Marylhurst Chamber Choir competed at the Cork International Choir Festival in Cork, Ireland, winning two trophies. Marylhurst’s choir placed third in the competition for the festival’s biggest prize, the Fleischmann International Trophy, and they were honored with the PEACE Trophy, awarded to the choir that best embraces the spirit of the festival.

When they return to Europe this summer, the Marylhurst Chamber Choir will extend their stay to Stockholm, Sweden, to connect with the choir that edged them out for the Fleischmann Trophy last year, Helene Stureborg’s Kammarkӧr.

“There are no hard feelings,” said Smith. “These events are more collegial than competitive, and our students come away with an increased connection to individuals and societies across the world.”
