Retired priest Father Scott Vandehey’s former parishioners at Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Verboort are hosting a celebration of the 50th anniversary of his ordination with a Mass of Thanksgiving at 10 a.m., May 22, at Visitation Church, followed by a lunch and continuation of the celebration at the parish’s Harris Hall.

Father Vandehey continues to help out at parishes, and is also known for his book, “Wooden Shoes West,” a history of Dutch Catholic families who emigrated to Oregon. Father Vandehey’s own ancestors were among those pioneer families. He traveled to the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France as well as to the Midwest and within Oregon to gather written and oral information.

Father Vandehey retired in 2011. Born in 1939, he was ordained in 1966. He served as associate pastor at Blessed Sacrament, Portland; St. Thomas More, Portland; St. John the Baptist, Milwaukie; and the Madeleine, Portland. His first assignment as pastor was at Holy Name Parish, Coquille. He then served at Holy Redeemer, North Bend, St. Mary, Eugene, and St. Cecilia, Beaverton. He lives at the St. John Vianney residence in Beaverton.

Visitation Church is at 4285 NW Visitation Rd, Forest Grove, 97116.
