All women are encouraged to join in a morning of reflection in the fireside room at St. Cyril Catholic Church in Wilsonville from 9:30 a.m. to noon on March 5. Mary Jo Tully, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Portland since 1990, will speak on deepening our awareness and appreciation of our relationship with our Jewish brothers and sisters. The talk's title is “Abraham and Sarah: my brother and sister.”

Tully is the face of the Catholic church for many in the Portland Jewish community — and her involvement in Jewish-Catholic dialogue actually began long before she came to Portland in 1989. She was a member of the Archdiocesan Jewish-Catholic Dialogue formed by Cardinal Bernardin in Chicago, and traveled to Israel with a group of Jewish rabbis.

Tully says that knowing that Jesus was a Jew made her profoundly aware that our roots are in Judaism. When she came to Portland, she formed a Jewish Catholic dialogue and looked for a family where she could share the Seder. For 26 years, Jews in the group have learned about Catholicism and Catholics have learned about Jews.

On October 25, 2015, at the Congregation Beth Israel in Portland, Tully and Rabbi Emanuel Rose, whose doctoral dissertation was on *Nostra Aetate (*he Second Vatican Council’s document on relations with people of non-Christian faiths), engaged in a commemorative celebration and reflection on the evolving Jewish Catholic relations in Portland. The celebration was held at Congregation Beth Israel.

Before coming to Oregon she was director of the Office for Religious Education in the Archdiocese of Chicago. She has a degree in philosophy from DePaul University, where she was honored with the Distinguished Alumna Award; a Masters Degree from Loyola University, Chicago; and an honorary doctorate from University of Portland. She has taken advanced courses in theology and liturgy from Notre Dame University and the Catholic University of America. In addition to her work in religious education, she has taught at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, Mundelein, IL, Loyola University, Chicago and the University of St. Thomas, Houston, TX. She has published 29 books including a textbook series and writes a column in The Catholic Sentinel.

In addition to being the chancellor, she is the vicar for religious, ecumenical officer, mission director and director of Catholic health care. She also teaches at Mount Angel Seminary.
