The 13 graduates of Franciscan Montessori Earth School and St. Francis Academy have been planning a peace trip to San Francisco, where they will learn about social outreach programs.
Franciscan Montessori Earth School and St. Francis Academy will hold its graduation for 13 eighth-graders at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at the Southeast Portland school.
The graduates are working to finalize appointments and visits for Peace Trip, their annual study that allows students to compare and contrast the social outreach programs of Portland with those of another city. During their study trip to San Francisco, students will gather information and synthesize it into their ideas about the human condition and how it relates to the need for peace.
For the last three months of this school year, the students were devoted to the study of peace, looking at it from a historical perspective and in light of current national and international events.
After researching background information, the students and staff organized the weeklong study tour in the California city, where they will participate in workshops, visit sites supporting the curriculum, and perform community service with programs that support social justice and education.
Faculty and staff say this combination of preparation and experience brings the subject matter alive for students. Upon their return, the students will prepare personal peace statements and develop an original theatrical production comprised of several vignettes, demonstrating their internalization of the curriculum that occurs through the integration of academics and real-life experiences.
Here are the graduates and the high schools they are attending: Olivia Aragon, La Salle; Ethan Bohling, Riverdale; Sorelle Bregman, La Salle; Daphne DeLaczay, Catlin Gabel; Mackenzie Greenslade, La Salle; Gabi Keirouz, La Salle; Ronan Kelly, La Salle; Andy Laird, La Salle; Alice Roberts, St. Mary’s Academy; Quinten Struyk-Bonn, La Salle; Gavin Sunderland, La Salle; Walter Thomajan, La Salle; and Zachary Williams, La Salle
