EUGENE — Marist Catholic High School received a $1,000 grant from the Japan Foundation, Los Angeles, to purchase teaching materials for the school’s Japanese-language program.

Marist, founded by the Marist Brothers, offers five levels of Japanese, three of which are certified College Now courses — in which students can earn college credit — and taught by Miyoko Nakajima King. King has a master’s degree in Japanese language and pedagogy from the University of Oregon.

The Japan Foundation promotes international awareness and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States through cultural exchange. The nonprofit is funded by an endowment from the Japanese government, annual government subsidies and private donations.
