In a decades-long tradition of celebrating the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, Tet, Our Lady of Lavang Parish in Northeast Portland marked the beginning of the Year of the Rooster with a celebration Jan. 27.

“This celebration of the Lunar New Year is a marvelous thing,” said Archbishop Alexander Sample who celebrated at the parish’s Tet Mass. “For you good people, the new year celebration is all about God,” said the archbishop, contrasting it to secular New Year revelry.

The tradition has been instilled in the Vietnamese culture for thousands of years, says Thi Phoung Pham, parishioner at Our Lady of Lavang.

For Father Ansgar Pham, pastor at Our Lady of Lavang, this year’s celebration was his first here as pastor.
“It’s always a joyful occassion,” he says.

Following Mass with Archbishop Sample, parishioners gathered in the parish hall for traditional banh chung sticky cakes and the lion dance celebration — said to bring prosperity, luck, joy and happiness.
