Holy Names Sisters join Marylhurst University board
Sisters Mary Breiling and Carol Higgins named trustees

MARYLHURST — Two leaders among the Sisters of the Holy Names — Sisters Mary Breiling and Carol Higgins — have been appointed to the Marylhurst University board of trustees. Both have a long history with the university. They join fellow Holy Names Sisters Roswitha Frawley, Jane Hibbard and Lynda Thompson on the 26-member board that guides the school.

“We are so pleased to welcome these two amazing women to our board,” said Melody Rose, president of Marylhurst. “Our university will benefit immensely from their experience and insight as educators and as Sisters.”

Sister Mary Breiling worked in education as a teacher and principal for 24 years. She served for several years on a governor’s education committee. In 1991, she moved into business management, serving as treasurer for her order for 14 years. She was part of planning, developing and building Mary’s Woods, a continuing-care retirement community, as well as other development and renovation projects on the Marylhurst campus. Sister Mary is a strong advocate of sustainable building and environmental sustainability. She holds master’s degrees in science and business administration as well as a certificate in telecommunications management. She also serves on the Province Leadership Team for the U.S.-Ontario Province of the Sisters of the Holy Names, on Mary’s Woods Board of Trustees, and as co-chair of the Clackamas County Aging Services Advisory Committee.

Sister Carol Higgins leads campus ministry at St. Mary’s Academy. From 2010 to 2014, she headed up campus ministry at Marylhurst University, where she also served on the faculty in the religious studies program. She has more than 17 years of experience as an educator. In addition to her years at St. Mary’s Academy and Marylhurst University, she served as teacher/administrator at Holy Redeemer School in North Portland and as principal at St. Peter School in Spokane. Sister Carol holds a doctoral degree in ministry from Washington Theological Union, master’s degrees in divinity (Marylhurst University) and education (University of Portland), and a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from Gonzaga University.
