HILLSBORO — St. Matthew student Emily Clauson won first place in a poster contest sponsored by the Archdiocese of Portland to promote the Year of Mercy. Clauson was the top pick in the sixth-to-eighth-grade category.
As a way to include children across the archdiocese in the Year of Mercy, students were asked to create a poster depicting God’s loving mercy in one of four categories: feed the hungry (grades K-two), shelter the homeless (grades three-five), corporal works of mercy (grades six-eight) and spiritual works of mercy (high school).
To illustrate the corporal works of mercy, Clauson depicted a homeless man sleeping on a bench wrapped in newspaper. Drawn on the newspaper are the seven corporal works of mercy. For her winning entry, Clauson received a $100 prize along with recognition at a Year of Mercy school liturgy in November.
