A crowd of youths enjoy a CYO dance. The dances are held nine times a year.

With another CYO dance around the corner, MaryAnn Altenhofen-Stewart, CYO dance director, recalls seeing a Facebook exchange between two college-aged girls reminiscing about their middle school CYO dances.

“What an impact these dances must have on these youths of our Catholic community, to be in college and still talking about them,” Altenhofen-Stewart says.

Nine times per year, September through May, the dances convene youths from as far away as Salem and Longview. At the Oaks Park Dance Pavilion in Southeast Portland, students meet peers from the Catholic community and make friends they will see in high school.

Altenhofen-Stewart and husband Bryan are starting their 12th year organizing CYO dances.

“We truly enjoy coordinating these dances and are committed to provide a safe and fun environment for all who attend,” they said in a statement. They explained how much they enjoy seeing the dance attendees blossom from reticent sixth-graders to fully engaged and confident eighth-graders.

The last dance of this school year is Friday, May 12. It’s the biggest dance of the season, when sixth-graders are welcomed for the first time. There is a farewell for eighth-graders moving on to high school.

Altenhofen-Stewart says many older students have asked for a reunion CYO dance.

“We just might have to add that event to the calendar and invite those girls on Facebook and all previous CYO dance attendees,” she says.
