MOUNT ANGEL — The Father Bernard Youth Center kitchen got a shiny upgrade with the help of GEM Equipment. The company, based in Mount Angel and Woodburn, donated a commercial-grade stainless steel countertop unit. Another benefactor had funded a gas range for the kitchen, which is used almost every weekend and often during the week to prepare meals for youth retreats and camps. Ed McKenney, one of the founding partners of GEM, agreed to replace the old wooden/Formica countertop. It was the finishing touch, since GEM had been hired to supply other countertops during an earlier stage of the kitchen remodel.
Each year, two-thirds of all costs to operate the center come from donors.
McKenney says that every time GEM has helped the youth center in the past, the company has experienced “abundant blessings.” This was no exception. Not long afterMcKenney agreed to the donation, GEM landed a large commercial order that had been pending for months.
