Carmen Kintz, a 2007 graduate of Regis High School in Stayton, is living in Seoul, South Korea and teaching English. Off hours, she volunteers for an overnight shift at a baby drop box.

The Rev. Lee Jong-rak began the site in 2009 to accept babies whose mothers feel unable to accept motherhood. The non-profit offers counseling and aid to the mothers and cares for the newborns until they can be taken to orphanages. In Korean culture, single mothers can be looked down upon. Also, babies with birth defects are often abandoned.
The drop box facility handles an average of 12 babies at a time. Kintz’s time is spent cuddling, changing and feeding. While mothers are encouraged to meet with the counselors and provide medical information, many times they are embarrassed and leave the child without any background information. In many cases, children are born at home with little information available about medical history. If the child is left for foster care the mother has the opportunity to help at the drop box and have the baby returned to her for care within six months or a reasonable period.
