MUKAWIR, Jordan — Jordan is home to the site where Herod Antipas imprisoned John the Baptist and in a drunken stupor promised the prophet’s head to a dancing girl.

The ruins of the palace occupy a steep hill overlooking the Dead Sea. There are columns, stone pits that held prisoners, walls and a view of large parts of Israel.

The road winds like a snake up from the Dead Sea to Mukawir. In less than an hour, visitors climb from 1,300 feet below sea level to 3,000 feet above. One can’t drive all the way to the ruins. The last mile requires a walk up gradual trail in windswept glory.

St. John the Baptist, who started and ended his mission in what is now Jordan, is the patron saint of Jordan for Roman Catholics.
