MILWAUKIE – Students at La Salle College Preparatory made the holidays brighter by giving to local families this winter.

As part of the school’s annual Christmas Drive, the high schoolers raised more than $9,500 to buy toys, clothes and other gifts for 33 families whose children attend Lot Whitcomb Elementary School, a Milwaukie school where more than 80 percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

In addition to giving the families gifts, students also donated household supplies such as toothbrushes and laundry detergent that they collected during a fall drive.

Both drives involved every student at La Salle.

One recipient said she was overwhelmed by the generosity.

“Thank you and the entire La Salle community for helping our family this Christmas,” she said in a message. “I am a single mom and would never have been able to give my children the Christmas they deserve if it weren’t for your help.”
