The Helping Hands program at St. Philip Benizi Parish in Oregon City provided eight Easter packages to local families with groceries, Easter dinner essentials and Easter baskets for children.

OREGON CITY — For most parishes, the season for generosity is Advent and Christmas. For St. Philip Benizi Parish, however, the Easter season is also a time to give. The parish compiled eight packages containing food for Easter dinners and Easter baskets for children.

The parish’s Helping Hands group provided Easter baskets for 31 children this year, more than any year past.

Bill Breshears and his wife, Jeannine, coordinated the project. They’ve been parishioners at St. Philip Benizi for more than 20 years and have run the parish’s Helping Hands program for about five years. Bill Breshears says he benefited from a food box when he first moved to Portland and was working part-time.

“I thought it was time I gave back,” he says.

In the Easter boxes, recipients receive an Easter ham, groceries like onions, milk, eggs, produce and canned goods. Each child in the family receives an Easter basket with toys, gift certificates and other goodies.

Coordinating the parish’s Helping Hands group has been rewarding, says Breshears. You get to meet people from all walks of life who are facing unfortunate circumstances or are just down on their luck. He enjoys giving them a little help, hoping that it may provide recipients an opportunity to better themselves.
