Two lawsuits filed Feb. 1 in U.S. District Court in Portland claim that two brothers, now 59 and 60, were sexually abused as boys by the late Father James Harris and the late Father Maurice Grammond.

The brothers were members of St. Paul Parish in Silverton at the time of the alleged abuse. The suits claim that Father Harris, then pastor in Silverton, began ministering to the family when the father became ill with leukemia. The suit goes on to say that Father Harris took the boys on overnight trips, including one to Seaside, where they were allegedly abused by Father Maurice Grammond.

Father Grammond was named in dozens of abuse suits and Father Harris in four previous suits, all settled by the Archdiocese of Portland.

“These most recent allegations and court filings have just been delivered to us,” the archdiocese said in a statement. “We are currently looking into them, as we do with every legal matter associated with the archdiocese. And as with previous allegations, we take these very seriously and will cooperate in whatever ways are required by law.”
